NZ FIRE RESISTANCE

1. Chemical fire raged through factory leaving only Glulam portals supporting remnants of roofing.

2. Charred portals maintained structural integrity supporting concrete block walls and enabling fire department to address seat of the fire, thus salvaging machinery.

3. Engineering checks established that the 9mm charr layer had sufficiently protected the remaining section so that the portals could continue to maintain the structural loads. The charr layer was sandblasted and the portal frames remained in position and were re-roofed.

4. Although they remained standing after the fire, the three half portals over the mixing area where the seat of the fire was located, required replacing. Because of the excellent fire resistant performance of the Glulam portals the complete building was reinstated and in operation 4 weeks after the fire.
