Ken McIntosh - Obituary We record with sadness as well as gratitude the passing of the founder and original Managing Director of MTL – Ken McIntosh on 3 December 2011. With his father Ian, Ken pioneered the development of Glulam manufacture in New Zealand from 1958. Ken led the company for 41 years before handing over the role of MD to Grant in 1999. However he remained an active part of MTL with wise advice spending time in the office up until months before his death. His genuine interest in all the staff and strong commitment to quality, integrity and innovation have been an example that we endeavour to emulate. His contribution to the wider timber industry was recognised when he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Professional Engineers in 2001. He also received a Meritorious Service Award from Standards Association of New Zealand for his contribution to the development of standards relating to manufacture of Glue laminated timber. Ken also served on a number of industry organisations – Timber Research and Development Association, Structural Engineered Timber Manufacturers Association, New Zealand Timber Certification Board, Standards Association New Zealand, New Zealand Timber Design Society (President 2003 -2006). His advocacy for the development of timber design was largely influential in the funding and appointment of Chairs of Timber Design at Auckland and Canterbury University Schools of Engineering. Ken’s passion for timber led him to visit many examples of timber buildings on his trips around the world and bring the enthusiasm for timber design and manufacture back to New Zealand. On his retirement he started back to furniture making, his trade from early years and spent the last 10 years making many beautiful pieces for friends and family. A fine record of his involvement in the development of the Glulam industry is recorded in the book he authored celebrating MTL 50 years of Glulam production. Ken is very fondly remembered and sadly missed. |
